Zainab Slemang van Rijmenant
A writer, editor, creative strategist and communications consultant, Zainab has worked in the media and communications industry for 10 years for various multi-national publishing brands such as The Foschini Group, seventeen magazine, Fast Company South Africa, Condé Nast and Independent Media. In 2017, she was instrumental in the PR roll-out for the opening of Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) in association with Gucci and the V&A Waterfront, and has worked with brands such as Huawei, Bodhisattva and ONQ Makeup in a creative capacity. She currently consults for Virgin Active South Africa and ANA Publishing, and is a board member of the Council of Modest Fashion Africa (COMFA).
Ulpha is a digital enthusiast who loves digital marketing, content, marketing and not forgetting a panache for fashion. She has over ten years’ experience in the digital industry. Fortunate to start out in the industry at a very young age while doing her Honours, she has evolved with the fast paced industry disruption of marketing technology. She has experience in digital content, digital marketing, content strategies, SEO, Google Analytics, creative design, digital strategies, social media management, website design and mobile applications and marketing. She’s creative, proactive and very passionate about the digital world. Her goal is to always use her expertise to produce high quality, imaginative and successful work.
Her career started in Retail Buying, Planning & Merchandising 21 Years ago with a company called Topics, a Ladies and Kids brand that she grew for 8 years in the industry. The South African retailers that have shaped her career in Buying and Sourcing for the last 13 Years include Foschini TFG, Pep, Ackermans and Cape Union Mart’s Old Khaki brand. She has experienced numerous trading environments across different markets within SA for the last two decades. This includes heading Merchandise Planning for Wear South Africa, the retail division of TCI Apparel, a huge local manufacturer. She is currently the MD of Urban Fluid (UF) Fashion, a Design Sourcing Specialist and Retail Consulting Agency, based in Ottery CT, whose clients range from emerging designers to large brand houses.
Leila’s industry experience began with her internship at the headquarters of Freudenberg Performance Material’s (FPM) in Germany where she received invaluable skills training alongside Hugo Boss, Max Mara & Esprit technologists. She was then recruited by FPM South Africa, which culminated in a 15 year tenure with senior roles in Quality Assurance and R&D. The impact of downsizing by a once leading apparel manufacturing sector in Cape Town, resulted in her entrepreneurial pursuits to stimulate local production activity. Her current fashion business ventures span both offline & online, the latter receiving business support as part of the ABSA Rise Scalarator program for Tech Female Founders in 2018. Leila’s research across these various industries, coupled with practical experience has led to key insights for a fashion business that will survive and thrive Industrial Revolution 4.0.
